Towanda Garage Sales

Towanda Area Garage Sales will be May 3rd - 6th at designated locations.  Maps and lists will be available at Kicks, Towanda Library, the community building and sale sites.

Red Carpet Corridor Festival May 5th - 6th

This will be the sixth year for the festival which is a celebration of Old Route 66 from Towanda to Joliet.  Enjoy 90 miles of fun!  This year each town will give away a special key.  As you travel the corridor, be sure and ask for a key from each of the towns.  Collect all the keys and receive a key chain.  At Towanda, the keys will be handed out at the Route 66 booth in North Park.
SATURDAY - Garage sales, Flea market in North Park along with antiques, food, crafts, bake sale and a 50/50 raffle.  Children will receive special designed balloons from 12:30 - 3:30pm.  Also check out the Radio Flyer wagon on display. 
SUNDAY - Garage sales, Flea market in North Park along with antiques, food, crafts, PTO bake sale and a raffle.  The Cattle Bandits Band will play at 1pm at the bandstand in North Park.  The America Legion will have breakfast at the Legion hall.  The fifth annual car show will be held on Old Route 66.  Registration begins at 8am - 12pm.  For more information on the car show, call Jodi at 815-579-6452.  Route 66 memorabilia will be for sale at the North Park.  For more information call Sharon at 309-728-2169 or Susie at 309-728-2195.

American Legion

As part of the Red Carpet Corridor, the Towanda American Legion will have a breakfast on Sunday, May 6th from 7:30 - 11am.  Breakfast includes eggs, egg casserole, sausage, bacon, hash browns, pancakes, fresh fruit, biscuits and gravy, juice, milk and coffee for $8.
Treat your mother to dinner out for Mother's Day weekend.  The American Legion will have a steak/shrimp dinner on Friday, May 11th from 5 - 7pm.  Dinner will include steak, shrimp or steak/shrimp combo, baked potato, salad, roll, drink and dessert for $10.  All mothers will be honored.  Carry outs available.
All dinners are open to the public.  Thank you for your support of the Legion and our Veterans.

Towanda District Library

Story Hours - Monday's at 10:30:  May 7th:  Going on a Bear Hunt, May 14th: Too Many Frogs, May 21st:  Marvelous Mud.
Tuesday Evening Knitting Group:  at 5pm every Tuesday evening a group of knitters, crotcheters and felters meet to work and share ideas.  Join the fun!
Towanda Reads:  Come and get it!  Author to speak at library on May 14th:  The public is invited to attend a 6pm presentation by author Robert Dirks who wrote Come and Get It! - which traces the history of cooking and dining in McLean County.  An Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at Illinois State University, Dirks was guest curator for the Coma and Get It exhibit at the McLean County Museum of History.  He has published extensively about food, famine, dietary patterns of various cultures and nutrition. Join the discussion with the author.  Bring your questions about our local food history.  Dirks will speak at the Normal Public Library at 2pm on May 14th as well.
Summer Reading Program - Reading Is So Delicious!  The program is on Tuesday evenings (5:30) and Wednesday mornings (10:30) this year.  The 7-week program runs from June 5th through July 24th.  We will be learning about foods, as well as tasting them.  Bring your children and your appetite!  The Tuesday evening programs include presenters for adults, as well as youth...chefs, cake decorators, Cooperative Extension professionals, professors, singers and other Food Dudes!
Towanda Elementary School Assembly Program -- Reading Is So Delicious!  Performer and teacher, Rob Erdmann, will delight the school children with his humor and imagination on Friday, May 18th.  He will bring pizza boxes and puppets to encourage the children to participate in the library's Summer Reading Program.  Reading as few as 6 books per summer helps assure reading skills retention from grade to grade.

Towanda Seniors

The Towanda Seniors Group will meet at noon on May 9th at the community building for a potluck dinner.  Meat will be provided.  Members and visitors are asked to bring side dishes and desserts and their own table service.  Drinks will be provided.  Hosts will be Ken and Mary Jones.  If you have any questions please call Beverly Meginnes at 728-2769.

First Baptist Church

Come join us May 13th for our Mother's Day service at 10:15.  Bible studies:  Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6pm.  Stop by and check out the FBC of Towanda garage sale May 4th and 5th from 8am to 2pm.  The proceeds will go to the Women's Committee.  The Women's Committee are in charge of hospitality functions and mission outreach.  Items will not be priced, donations are appreciated.

HCE

The Towanda HCE group will meet for the regular monthly meeting at the Towanda District Library on Monday, May 14th at 6pm.  Author Robert Dirks who wrote the book "Come and Get It" will be presenting a program at 6pm.  Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at ISU, Dirks was guest curator for the Come and Get It exhibit at the McLean County Museum of History.  He has published extensively about food, famine, dietary patterns of various cultures and nutrition.  Bring your local food history questions.  The HCE unit will hold a short business meeting at the library after the presentation.
This is the regular meeting night for Towanda HCE but a different time and place to enable members and guests to attend the presentation at the library.  The public is invited to attend also and questions about the HCE may be directed to Pat Pulokas, 309-728-2118.  Hostesses for the evening are Helen Guth and Pat Pulokas.  Refreshments will be served.

Recycle

The Towanda Boy Scouts will be holding an electronic recycle drop-off at the Village Maintenance Shed, 211 W Washington, on Saturday, May 19th from 9am - noon.  Items that will be accepted include:  aluminum cans, small appliances, printers, radios, electric cords, audio equipment, computers and monitors.  Proceeds will support Towanda Boy Scouts.

Fourth of July Committee

The monthly planning meeting for the 4th of July activities in Towanda will be held 7pm on Tuesday, May 29th, at the community building.  The planning meeting is open to anyone who can help.  Please attend and lend a hand to this awesome annual event in Towanda.  Contact Linda Potts at 728-2384 for Flea market  information or Debbie Kinsella at 728-2216 for general questions.

Community Coffee

There will be no morning coffee in June, July and August.  Morning coffee will start in September.  Watch newsletter for time and dates.

ESDA

The Village of Towanda Emergency Services Disaster Agency is looking for local members.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact ESDA Director Tom Wagner at 309-287-7861.  A training class will be scheduled for new members.

Route 66 Trail

Volunteers have been tending the gardens along the Route 66 trail and they would welcome others that have an interest in making this community asset look even better.  Wednesday mornings are the usual work time and the goal is to work no longer than 1 to 1 1/2 hours on any one day.  Digging out weeds is the activity attacked most often.  Contact Carol Myers at 728-2749 or clmyers@frontier.com to learn more.  This does not need to be a full-time commitment.  Volunteers merely help as their personal schedules allow.

Towanda 4-H

The Towanda 4-H met on Tuesday, April 3rd at the Towanda Community building.  The kids made Easter gift bags for the Seniors.  Our next meeting will be on Monday, April 30th.  We will be taking a field trip to the Wind Farm.  After the field trip we will return to the community building to work on projects.
The Towanda 4-H is open to boys and girls from ages 8-18 by September 1st.  Clover Buds are for kids ages 5-7.  For more information contact Kathy Schultz at 728-2137 or Jeanie Wager at 728-2852.

Towanda Busy Bees

The Towanda Busy Bees 4-H Club will be having a Blood Drive on Tuesday, June 19th from 3 - 7pm at the Towanda Community building.  WE NEED YOU!!  Schedule your BLOOD DONATION by calling Pat Pulokas at 309-728-2118 or Martha Rients at 309-728-2178.

Village Board

Water rates and expenses were reviewed by the Towanda Village Board during the March and April 2012 Village Board meetings.  The base water rate will increase $10 per month per customer.  This rate is in reflection of increases in water prices from the City of Bloomington.  The increase will start with May water consumption.
